The Pont des Demoiselles (Bridge of the Damsels) is one of the best-known districts of Toulouse, the pink city. With its relatively charming name, although a bit mysterious, it continues to attract new residents. Learn more about this area of Toulouse in this article. Maybe it will make you want to go there or even live there?

What is the Pont des Demoiselles?

The Pont des Demoiselles is located in the south-east of Toulouse, south of the Côte Pavée and north-west of Montaudran. It is a residential area which adjoins the Canal du Midi. It is structured around Avenue Saint-Exupéry. It is even included in all of the Pont des Demoiselles-Ormeau-Montaudran-La Terrasse districts.

History of the Pont des Demoiselles

The Pont des Demoiselles is quite recent in itself, since it dates from 1971. Before it, another bridge made it possible to connect the two banks of the Canal du Midi. This one had been built in 1683, but at first had a poor appearance. Not very wide, it was not really practical when the goods had to pass by this road: only 2.50 meters. Noting this problem, it was enlarged to make transit easier for plows. Indeed, 6 meters were much more convenient than the initial 2.50 meters!

The Pont de Montaudran experienced a misadventure in 1961 because of a car which caught its parapet. The fog had in fact disturbed the vision of the motorist who had unfortunately knocked down this wall. To prevent this from happening again, a new bridge was built in its place. This is the one we know today as the Pont des Demoiselles. This one is much more capable of accommodating a denser traffic of vehicles.

The etymology of the district

Who are these famous damsels mentioned in the name of this bridge? The people of Toulouse remain quite divided in their opinions on the matter:

  • some think that the word refers to these insects resembling dragonflies, really widespread in the waters of the canal;
  • others agree that these damsels designate the prostitutes who frequented the place, because it welcomed around 12,000 workers;
  • it would be a reference to a revolution that took place in Ariège. Peasants disguised themselves as women to revolt anonymously against the oppressors. These people had even faced the army at the gates of Toulouse.

What are the different points of interest in the Pont des Demoiselles district?

The Canal du Midi

This is probably the best place in the neighborhood. Bike rides near the Canal du Midi really have their own charm. Depending on the weather, this makes the urban landscape even more attractive, worthy of a photo!

A neighborhood close to many facilities

The Pont des Demoiselles has a good number of small shops. Ideal for restocking without having to travel too much.

The district will be served by metro line C. For the moment, the bus remains the most viable means of transport to access it if you do not have a vehicle. The urban project provides for the development of a cycle path in order to reduce car traffic.

The city center remains easily accessible; in less than 20 minutes by bus, you will reach the Place du Capitole. The University of Paul Sabatier is also not very far, which is perfect for students. Allow around 30 minutes by metro to reach the university site.

A neighborhood near Montaudran

Montaudran is a fairly dynamic district which hosts the Halle de La Machine with its many animatronics. We will mention in particular the famous Minotaur, but also the Big Spider.

A former runway at Toulouse-Montaudran airport, you can take a guided tour of L'Envol des Pionniers (The Flight of the Pioneers). This fascinating museum traces the history of aviation in the city and in particular of Aéropostale, the first airmail line linking France to South America.

A good choice in real estate

Whether you want to make it your main residence or a rental investment, this is a prime location in the Occitan capital. Thanks to the amenities offered on site and its proximity to various centers of interest or schools, the district is really attractive. Much cheaper than the Côte Pavée, it is an excellent alternative for a very good quality of life.
