The must-see districts of Bordeaux

During your visit to the city of Bordeaux, there will be certain districts not to be missed under any circumstances. The architecture, mainly based on the classical and neoclassical style, gives cohesion to all the buildings of the city. Visit the bourgeois, modern and popular districts and learn more about the history of Bordeaux, during your walks.

Old Bordeaux and Saint-Pierre

This complex includes the districts of Saint-Pierre, Sainte-Colombe and Sainte-Croix. The district underwent a rapid transformation in the 18th century. At the time, a huge wall protected the city and was destroyed to make way for the Place de la Bourse, the rue Royale and the Place du Parlement opening onto the Garonne river. The district is teeming with architectural works and unique monuments. Admire the Place du Parlement, restored identically since 1760. Stroll through Place Saint-Pierre where bourgeois families have settled. Discover Place du Palais and the magnificent Porte Cailhau dating from 1494, in homage to the victory of Charles VII at Fournoue. Not forgetting the unmissable Place de la Bourse and its water mirror known throughout the world!

The Chartrons

It's the bohemian district of Bordeaux. Full of history, the Chartrons district was popular with English, Flemish and Irish wine merchants who established their trade there in the 17th century. Over the years, the district gives way to a multicultural environment thanks to these populations from all origins. During your visit to the Chartrons, stroll through rue Notre-Dame and its many antique and second-hand shops. Admire the superb climbing plants on the facades of the buildings, giving this picturesque charm to the district. Stop for a drink on Place des Halles and if you're lucky, you might come across the market on the banks of the Garonne.

The Quinconces

Place des Quinconces once housed the Trompette castle. It was the high place of the Kings of France, who came to assert their authority over the city, after having taken it back from the English. Ceded to the municipality in 1816 by Louis XVIII, the city destroyed the castle to create the Place des Quinconces. It is today the meeting place for many shows, concerts and events. Full of symbolism, this district of Bordeaux and more precisely Place des Quinconces is a true tribute to the inhabitants of the city. On one side you can admire the superb Girondins monument, with its immense column topped by the angel of freedom. On the other, you will find the rostral columns, without forgetting the marble sculptures of Montesquieu and Montaigne.

The other districts of Bordeaux

If you have time in front of you, then add these few districts to your list of places to visit.

The Bassins à flot and the Bacalan

Long neglected because of its industrial and port past, the Bassins à flot district has been reborn in recent years. New projects, housing, modern infrastructures are gradually emerging and revitalizing the district. It is today very popular with students and young professionals, looking for accommodation in a lively district. Do not miss the amazing Cité du Vin and discover all the history of wine, from its conception to tasting. Take a tour of the submarine base and the Bassins des lumières space. This extraordinary place will take you on a remarkable visual and sound journey. And for the gourmets, the Bacalan halls bring together the best artisans-producers in the region.

The Public Garden

The Public Garden was created in 1756 and is the oldest green space in the city. Built at the time to offer a refreshing setting to the people of Bordeaux, the park remains popular with residents of the district. If in the past it was designed as a French garden, it was redesigned as an English garden in the 1850s. The garden hosts the Natural History museum and temporary exhibitions that will delight young and old. You will also find the Guignol puppet theater and playgrounds for children. Small bridges, paths, tropical greenhouses, it is the ideal place to take a break during a day full of visits.

Pey-Berland

In the heart of Bordeaux and located around the Town Hall, the Pey-Berland district will delight art lovers. In 1771, Cardinal de Rohan had the comfortable Palais Rohan built on Place Pey-Berland. Much later, the palace became the seat of the Town Hall. Not far away, the Saint-André hospital, founded in the 14th century, is also part of the landscape of this district of Bordeaux. At the bend of the pedestrian and shopping streets, teeming with shops, cafes and restaurants, enjoy the many museums and theaters. The Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Aquitaine, the Le Femina theater or L'Utopia are all located near Pey-Berland. A true immersion in Bordeaux cultural life. Feel free to extend your visit with the discovery of the districts of Caudéran, the Golden Triangle, the Bastide or the Grand Théâtre. After this busy day, go to one of our B&B HOTELS in Bordeaux !
