Museum of work

The Museum of Labor gives Hamburg residents and visitors a look behind the scenes. Everything revolves around the question of how life and work have changed over the past 200 years. The focus is on industrialization and its influence on social, cultural and socio-economic factors in our society. So if you want to find out more about Hamburg's technological, industrial and social history, you should definitely pay a visit to the Museum der Arbeit in Barmbek.

Discover work & life in the north of Germany

On the former factory site of the New York Hamburger Gummi-Waaren Compagnie from 1871, the Museum of Labor invites you on an incomparable journey of discovery. The site, which is now a listed building, offers enough space to experience a historic printing works as well as a classic trading office, a metal workshop and various special exhibitions on the subject of work.  Since the early 1970s, the Museum der Arbeit has provided fascinating insights into the rapid changes in the world of work in recent years. However, it is not only the history of work in the northern German Hanseatic city that is explored, but also the lives of the people living on the Elbe. Instead of merely exploring the topic in theory, the museum has been inviting visitors to try out, touch and explore since its opening. For example, courses in printing workshops and interactive tours were offered here back in the 1980s. To this day, the Museum der Arbeit is a living museum that invites visitors to experience and do things for themselves.  Practical demonstrations, courses and small workshops on historical techniques such as lead casting, milling, letterpress printing, lithography and lithographic printing make a visit to the museum a fascinating experience for young and old alike. In addition, the Monday workshop evenings in particular provide a deeper insight into the everyday working life of times long past. In the bookbinding workshop, for example, you can learn how to bind or repair books under expert guidance. Learn more about line etching and printing techniques or realize your own personal printing project. If, on the other hand, you are planning a visit to the museum at the weekend, you will always have the opportunity to make sweets, roast coffee or put your skills to the test at the antique knitting machine and work on unique handicrafts. What you should definitely not miss during a visit to the Barmbek Museum, however, is a look at T.R.U.D.E, the cutting wheel of the world's largest tunnel boring machine, which was used, among other things, during the construction of the fourth Elbe tunnel tube in Hamburg between 1997 and 2000.

Current events

Visitors to Hamburg's Museum für Arbeit not only experience an exciting journey through the changing history of work, but can also get hands-on at various events and learn more about topics such as typesetting and printing, working with the wood type milling machine, lithography and lithographic printing or the monotype. In addition, the museum regularly offers unique family tours such as Particle Physics for All, which present even complex topics in an accessible way.
