The state capital of Baden-Württemberg delights its visitors with over 40 museums. Whether natural history, art, architecture or technology - the cultural capital offers the right place for every interest. However, by far the most visited and one of the most beautiful museums in the city is the Mercedes-Benz Museum, where you can experience a journey through automotive history. The futuristic building, which is reminiscent of a DNA structure, is just a five-minute drive, a 30-minute walk or a quarter of an hour by public transport from your B&B Hotel Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt. We'll tell you how best to plan your visit and what you shouldn't miss out on here!
In 2022, over 600,000 guests visited the museum - this figure speaks for itself: you don't necessarily have to be a technology fan or car enthusiast to enjoy this museum. The 130 years of contemporary history is structured and presented in such an exciting way that it captivates everyone. Added to this is the unique and impressive architectural setting in which the history of the famous car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is told.
The interior design is surprising: there are neither straight walls nor closed rooms. Inside, a kind of DNA double helix runs through the building. Who wouldn't think of human genetic material, which is inherited, and of scientific and technological progress, which is also passed on and perfected from generation to generation? Another advantage of the building structure: the large façades offer a magnificent view over Stuttgart! And we have the Dutch architect Ben van Berkel and his architectural firm UNStudio to thank for this surprising architecture.
The two tours created by the double helix take you on an exciting journey that begins on the ninth level. From here, the paths wind their way downwards in wide curves through the extensive collection. The myth tour tells the story of the brand from the invention of the first automobile to the present day in seven myth rooms. The second tour leads through five collection rooms, in which the numerous vehicles are exhibited and the focus is on different eras. Of course, you can switch between the different spheres at any time.
The exhibition not only takes a look into the past. The museum also shows the latest developments of the present and the future. Among the 1,500 exhibits, including 160 vehicles, there are also spectacular futuristic prototypes that many people would enjoy as everyday cars. In the Collection rooms, you can discover the first 1st generation Daimler-Benz bus, historic fire engines and Pope John Paul II's papamobile. The Myths Tour breaks down the history of the brand into seven eras from 1886 to 1982 and the present day. Here you can find out everything about the invention of the automobile, the
development of the brand, diesel engines and superchargers, safety and the environment as well as the races and records of the Silver Arrows. Further exhibits and surprising knowledge await you, e.g: The world's first motorcycle was built back in 1885 and traveled at 12 km/h!
Want to take the wheel yourself? The museum is also an experience for the youngest visitors. Here, children can imagine themselves in the first automobile and get behind the wheel of a garbage truck or the 1974 World Championship bus. Or perhaps they prefer to choose their favorite racing car and dream of winning a race to the sound of cheers. A free audio guide for children makes this possible. There are also special interactive activities for children and young people on various topics at CAMPUS. Participation is free of charge. Children's birthdays can also be celebrated here.
Another interesting place for young people is the Fascination of Technology area, which can be visited after the guided tours on the lowest level. The freely accessible exhibition provides insights into the day-to-day work of developers and engineers at Daimler and reveals interesting facts about the future of the automobile.
Baby changing rooms, elevators and all the other services you would expect are available at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. A café, a restaurant and various stores round off the offer.
The best way to get to Neckarpark by VVS public transport is to take the U1 to the Mercedesstraße stop or the U19 to NeckarPark. The S-Bahn line S1 also goes directly to the museum, NeckarPark stop. Opening hours: The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm. But watch out, the last elevator leaves at 5:20 pm! Tip: Are you a car fan and interested in technology and have already been to the Porsche Museum? Take advantage of this: On presentation of your Porsche Museum admission ticket, you will receive a 25% discount on admission to the Mercedes-Benz Museum!
