U-Boat Museum Hamburg

A visit to Hamburg is something very special. Because in the multifaceted Hanseatic city on the Elbe, you can expect not only maritime flair, but also a beautiful old town and popular attractions such as the Michel or the fantastic Elbphilharmonie concert hall. But what would Hamburg be without its port? Stroll through the modern Hafencity and let the fresh breeze blow around your nose at the Landungsbrücken. Enjoy a fish sandwich here and marvel at the countless ships and barges that have long since become an integral part of the cityscape. If you want to take a look behind the scenes, you should definitely visit the Hamburg Submarine Museum at the fish market!

A look behind the scenes

Lots of water, bridges, countless canals and one of Europe's largest container ports create a breathtaking ambience in Hamburg. However, if a classic harbor tour or a visit to the Rickmer museum ship is not enough against this backdrop, you should explore the U-434 boat museum in the port of Hamburg. Step aboard the Soviet warship U434 near the Reeperbahn and fish market in St. Pauli and learn more about the life of the navy and the technical equipment. Although the Soviet and Russian navy ship, which was built in the 1970s, is still fully functional today, it has been used exclusively as a museum ship since 2002 and is no longer used for underwater missions. Nevertheless, adults can relive the horrors of the Cold War by visiting the claustrophobic corridors.  With a width of around 8.70 meters and a length of over 90 meters, the Tango class U-434 is one of the longest non-nuclear submarines in the world. Nevertheless, space on board is limited when you consider that the boat was built for a crew of up to 78 men. But why not see it for yourself? Join a professional guided tour and take a look at the accommodation, officers' quarters, engine rooms and torpedo rooms. Or let yourself be inspired on the bridge of the ship with detailed information about its history and functions.

It was only put into reserve at the end of the 1990s and finally taken out of the fleet in 2002, whereupon it was purchased by private investors and transported to Hamburg.

As the submarine was not allowed to call at the Hanseatic city under its own power, it was towed during the entire transfer. At the same time, numerous technical systems were removed from the boat by the Russian navy during transportation. In Hamburg, the boat was then further converted by Blohm & Voss to transform the ship into one of the city's most exciting museums. In the course of the work, the boat was given large access holes, particularly at the bow and stern, which give the numerous visitors access to the ship, but would make underwater explorations impossible today.

Tickets & entrance fees

If you don't want to miss out on the adventure on board the U-434, you should visit the U-Bootmuseum Hamburg GmbH not far from the old Elbe tunnel in St. Pauli. From Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 20:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 20:00, you can visit the boat either on your own or as part of a guided tour. However, as the guided tours on the boat only take place for groups of at least five people, it is advisable to make a reservation. Important information on data protection can be found directly on the website of the submarine museum. Alternatively, you can also purchase tickets for a visit to the ship directly on site at the box office. The price for adults is currently €9.00. Children aged 5 and over and schoolchildren only pay €6.00. If you visit the U-434 as a family (two adults + 2 children), you will also receive an attractive discount with the family ticket (€22.00). You then pay an extra €5.00 per visitor for a guided tour. Important: There is no barrier-free access available on the boat. It is therefore not recommended for people with physical disabilities or claustrophobia to visit the submarine. A visit with a wheelchair or baby carriage is also not possible due to lack of space.
