The historic center of Stuttgart

In Stuttgart, you don't have to go far from the city center to experience sights and activities for the whole day. From our B&B Hotel to Charlottenplatz in Stuttgart-Mitte, it's just 10 minutes or seven stops on the subway - and you're already in the historic city center.

The city center was largely destroyed during the Second World War, which is why many buildings from the 50s and 60s characterize the cityscape. Nevertheless, Stuttgart has many individual historical gems such as the palace and the adjacent palace park, which is a favorite spot for Stuttgart residents, especially in summer.

To the east of Keplerstraße, where the college and university are located, is the palace, which was built in 1746. The palace square and the palace gardens, which extend as far as the Neckar, today form one of the most beautiful inner-city green spaces in Germany. The eye-catcher in the middle of the Schlossplatz is a 30-meter-high column with the figure of the goddess Concordia.

What must you have seen?

Königsstraße forms the center of the central district. At 1.2 kilometers, it is one of the longest pedestrian zones in Europe and is lined with many well-known stores and department stores. Is this where the water splashes? In 1977, a fountain was built in the shape of a dandelion, which has provided refreshment on hot summer days ever since.

Stuttgart's town hall stands out with its 60-meter-high bell tower. The modern tower replaces the previous building, which was destroyed in the war, and now houses an astronomical clock with a carillon. It is a lunar clock that displays the current phase of the moon with a hand. The three revolving elevators in the town hall, better known as paternosters, are also interesting. They have been in operation since the 1950s and are regularly modernized. A ride in one of the twelve cabins is a special experience.

The first Schiller monument was inaugurated on Schillerplatz in 1839. The poet, who is famous beyond the borders of Germany, still watches over the beautiful square, which is bordered by the 1000-year-old collegiate church with its two unequal towers.

What do you have to do?

After a shopping spree on Königsstraße, it's worth making a detour to the lively markets in front of Stuttgart City Hall. They take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and offer a wide selection of fresh organic vegetables, bread, meat, cheese and fish from the region.

How about a great evening event? Then a visit to the Staatstheater Stuttgart's three-stage theater is well worthwhile. The opera, ballet and theater are located on the Eckensee in the Upper Palace Gardens. Take a look at the program, there's sure to be something for you!

Finally, you can treat yourself to a small delicacy in the Stuttgart market hall or end your day with a delicious ice cream on the Schlossplatz.
