Charlottenburg Palace was built between 1695 and 1699 according to the detailed designs of architect J. Arnold Nering. Siméon Godeau also laid out a French Baroque garden full of details around the palace from 1697. While the palace was initially only planned as a small garden or pleasure palace for the wife of Elector Frederick III, Sophie Charlotte, it was used as one of the couple's preferred seats of power after the Elector's coronation. After Frederick III became the first German King of Prussia in 1701, it was the task of architect Eosander von Göthe to extend and redesign the palace in the style of Versailles. Accordingly, the original building was extended with projecting side wings and an open-air courtyard of honor. At the same time, Charlottenburg Palace was also given its characteristic dome, which is still considered too large for the building today. In addition, the 55-hectare park surrounding the palace was extended. The Orangery and various adjoining buildings such as the Belvedere are still fascinating today. As the largest palace complex in Berlin, Charlottenburg Palace attracts numerous visitors every year. And no wonder! Visitors to the palace not only have the opportunity to visit the magnificent palace gardens, but can also pay a visit to the fantastic Porcelain Cabinet or the museum. Learn more about the eventful Prussian history, the life of the Hohenzollerns and the architectural development of the complex. You will be amazed!
Would you like to take a look behind the scenes and learn more about the royal history of the Hohenzollerns in Berlin? Then Charlottenburg Palace is just the place for you! You can easily reach Charlottenburg Palace by car, train or bus. While there are plenty of parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the palace, we particularly recommend taking the bus. The bus stop Luisenplatz/Schloss Charlottenburg is regularly served by lines 109 and M45 and stops directly in front of the entrance. However, the RE4 and RE7, as well as the U2 and U7, also stop not far from the palace.
