Planten un Blomen is a green oasis in the heart of the Hanseatic city, in the Altona district. The almost 47-hectare park not only serves the people of Hamburg as a place to relax and retreat in the middle of the city, but also connects the Elbe and the Outer Alster. Planten un Blomen thus creates a fantastic link between the old town and the university, as well as the exhibition and congress center with the lively St. Pauli district. Find out here what else makes Hamburg's largest park one of the city's most popular attractions.
Planten un Blomen is Low German and simply means plants and flowers. And visitors can see at first glance that the city park lives up to its name. From romantic themed gardens to a fantastic apothecary garden, various show greenhouses, a park lake, extensive lawns and aromatic herb beds to the Japanese garden, everything in the beautiful park revolves around (exotic) plants and flowers. Artistic gardener Isaak Altmann was commissioned to transform Hamburg's former ramparts into a green oasis back in 1820. The nearby cemetery grounds behind the Dammtor, as well as the zoological garden, which only opened in 1863, were gradually integrated into the green rampart, creating a breathtaking landscape park between Holstenwall and Millerntor by 1837. Following the resounding success of the 1897 International Horticultural Exhibition in the Great Wall, the entire area was redesigned from 1934. The park is further expanded under the Low German name Planten un Blomen and where the Low German Garden Show was held at the beginning, an ice rink, a fountain and many other attractions are gradually built. After the Second World War, the reconstruction of the park was hardly a priority. It was not until the planning of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in 1953 that the park came back into the limelight. As part of the preparations, a 36-metre-high observation tower and a water organ were erected on the grounds of Planten un Blomen. To this day, it continues to delight visitors every day from 10 p.m. with fantastic water light concerts. Hamburg also hosts the IGA in 1973. Planten un Blomen, the old botanical garden and the ramparts are combined into one site. At the same time, the Congress CentrumHamburg (CCH) is built at the former entrance to the park and not far from the Hamburg Trade Fair. Visitors were able to explore the enormous, modernized grounds between Dammtor, the television tower and Millerntor on specially constructed park rides until 1982. As part of the renovation work, the now too small botanical garden was relocated to Klein Flottbek in 1979 and later renamed the Loki-Schmidt-Garten.
Hamburg's largest city park is home to countless attractions. The undisputed highlights include the picturesque Apothecary Garden, which delights visitors with its countless medicinal herbs, the colorful Citizens' Garden and the extensive Rose Garden. The beautiful Japanese garden with its traditional teahouse is also well worth a visit. Enjoy the fantastic tranquillity amidst the exotic plants and ponds or stroll from here to the retro Bullerberge playground. Families with children should also visit the mini golf course, the traditional pottery parlor and the fabulous trampoline area in the park. While the adults relax at the kiosk, the kids can let off steam here. Those who want to soak up the sun in peace and quiet afterwards should secure a spot under the lemon and hibiscus trees on the Mediterranean terraces. Or you can enjoy the fantastic light concerts in the park from the beginning of May to the end of September. The water organ is located directly on the park lake. Especially in winter, you should not miss out on a visit to the park's greenhouses, which are open to the public all year round.
