There are numerous small castles in Baden-Württemberg, but one of the most beautiful is probably the New Stuttgart Palace. Just seven subway stops from your room at the B&B Hotel Stuttgart Centre will take you directly to one of the city's most beautiful sights. The baroque palace on Schlossplatz is located in the city center and, with its adjacent palace garden, is a green oasis for visitors and residents alike.
B&B Hotels will guide you through the magnificent corridors and rooms of the historic building and immerse you in Württemberg's royal past. You will also learn all about the current exhibitions and events organized at the palace. Join us on this journey through time.
Visitors to Stuttgart no longer need to travel to Versailles... At least here they can enjoy the architecture of the Palace of Versailles in miniature. It all began when the young Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg came to Stuttgart at the age of 16 and the former Old Palace no longer met his requirements. A new palace was needed! The Duke even threatened to move his seat of power to Ludwigsburg. In the end, however, the new building based on the French model was started - although the duke did not live to see its completion in his lifetime.
As the commissioned construction of the new, magnificent palace took around 60 years, the building architecturally reflects many eras and styles, from Baroque to Rococo to Classicism. Various architects, including Leopoldo Mattia Retti and Nikolaus Friedrich Thouret, oversaw the new construction, in which the kings of Württemberg were able to reside until the 19th century.
After the abdication of the last German king, Wilhelm II, in 1918, the palace became state property and was used for offices and exhibition rooms, a museum and a police headquarters. It was thus open to the public. Its almost complete destruction during the Second World War revived discussions about its reconstruction.
The best way to see at least part of the New Palace is to visit the State Museum. Only part of the museum's collection is housed in the New Palace. Only Roman antiquity can be admired here. The main collections of the State Museum are located in the Old Palace.
In the Old Palace, the “LegendäreMeisterWerke” exhibition tells the cultural history of the state in fast motion and provides insights into the life of the people of Württemberg - from the first people in the Neckar Valley to the beginning of the 20th century.
From the Stone Age to ancient Roman rule to the Kingdom of Württemberg, young and old learn about the traditions and cultures of the region. Incidentally, this journey through time can also be undertaken using virtual reality - simply put on your glasses and you're off to the Middle Ages!
Another exhibition is dedicated to the treasures of antiquity and the Celts and shows vases, filigree jewelry or colorful mummy portraits. As the name suggests, clocks and scientific instruments can be seen in the clock vault. Other exhibitions focus on the history of glass through the millennia and on musical instruments in the House of Music on Schillerplatz. There is also a sound laboratory here, where you can make music yourself with a humming pot, water organ or cowbell piano.
There are interactive events in the state museum where young visitors can immerse themselves in the world of witches, for example. In 2024, they could work magic with a little witch, fly brooms, defend themselves against injustice and even prove themselves in a witch test on the Blocksberg during Walpurgis Night.
The diverse events on offer range from concerts, special exhibitions and markets to crime scene premieres! The White Hall is used for concerts and can be hired for cultural and festive events. Current events include Vivaldi chamber concerts and Mozart master concerts, choir performances by the Philharmonia Stuttgart, as well as events organized by SWR: the Tatort premiere, comedy shows or Pop & Poesie in Concert.
The reconstructed halls in the central wing are used by the state government for prestigious occasions. The Marble Hall can be hired for particularly magnificent weddings. Seven silver chandeliers light up the hall - a good omen, as the number seven is known to bring good luck. Inquiries can be made directly to the castle.
The Schlossplatz in front of the New Palace is also very popular with the people of Stuttgart for events. Here you can enjoy sunny afternoons with friends and family, as there is always something going on. Numerous parties and festivals take place in spring and summer, including the summer festival, the animated film festival and the Jazz Open.
As part of the historic center, the palace can be reached by almost all streetcar and bus lines in the area. The most important stops are Schlossplatz and Charlottenplatz.
