Island park in Wilhelmsburg

The Inselpark at a glance

Until the end of 2013, the Inselpark in Wilhelmsburg in the district of Harburg was home to the International Garden Show (IGS). However, the 100-hectare (ha) recreational area in the heart of Harburg was then opened to the public. In recent years, the green island has become one of the most popular excursion destinations for outdoor enthusiasts and families with children. Where there were green meadows, allotments, trees and biotopes before the international GS, there is now a breathtaking public park full of worthwhile attractions. Sunbathing lawns, various play and sports areas, a fantastic high ropes course and cozy barbecue areas invite you to linger and relax. Thanks to the various restaurants and kiosks in the Inselpark and the immediate surroundings, your physical well-being is also taken care of. Nevertheless, numerous visitors to the Inselpark can still admire remnants of the IGS, such as the fantastic plant containers, hedges, raised beds, allotments, ponds and footbridges. In addition, the sports and play area from the garden show as well as the fantastic aqua soccer pool, the mobile stage and the various playgrounds have been preserved. The Inselpark therefore offers a fabulous mix of action and relaxation in the great outdoors. Some of the best attractions are briefly presented below.

Edible island park

The green island park oasis in the center of Harburg holds an incredible natural treasure full of shrubs, herbs, trees and flowers. There are 150 different species alone growing wild in the huge park. But that's not all. Under the “edible island park” concept, potatoes as well as lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes are grown in the raised beds in the home garden and in the nature experience garden, which can be harvested, collected and of course tasted by all visitors.

Sports facilities in the Inselpark

The Inselpark is the perfect place for sports enthusiasts. Not only is there plenty of space to play and exercise, but there are also various sports facilities on offer. For example, visit the climbing hall, the Inselpark swimming pool or the fantastic skate park. Or show off your skills on five different courses and a giant rope slide in the unique Hanserock high ropes course.

Playgrounds in the Inselpark

Five playgrounds in the Inselpark invite children to play and let off steam. The various playgrounds give children the chance to slide, balance and dig to their heart's content. If your kids also need to cool off in summer, you should visit the fantastic Atlantis water playground. But no matter what you decide, boredom will certainly not be an issue with this offer.

Willi Villa

The Willi Villa has been an institution in Harburg's Inselpark for years. The wooden kiosk with a view of the Kuckucksteich pond not only provides visitors to the Inselpark with delicious snacks and refreshing drinks, but also rents out canoes to explore the park from the water.

Wilhelmsburg waterworks

Built in 1911, the Wilhelmsburg waterworks is considered a landmark of Hamburg's water art and is particularly popular with architecture fans. So take the opportunity to visit the listed building during your trip to Harburg.

Haze and fog garden

An absolute highlight in the island park is the garden of mist and fog, which is less reminiscent of northern Germany than a distant rainforest thanks to constant watering. So embark on a fantastic journey and explore swamp cypresses, pink-flowering bergenias and many other plants amidst the light wafts of mist. But beware, the high humidity is not for everyone, especially on warm days.

Events in the Inselpark

Of course, the Inselpark is always chosen as the venue for the region's various festivals. More detailed information on the current calendar of events can be found on the official Inselpark website or from the Harburg district tourist board.

Location & approach

The Inselpark is located on Europe's largest river island in Harburg Mitte, only about 10 kilometers from Hamburg city center and can be easily reached by public transport. From Hamburg, for example, you can take bus lines M13, 34, 151, 152, 154, 156 or 252 directly to the Inselpark. Or you can take the S3 or S31 train to Wilhelmsburg. Then all you have to do is cross the Muharrem Acar Bridge and follow Neuenfelder-Straße to Kurt-Emmerich Platz. And the Inselpark begins. Alternatively, you can also reach the Inselpark by bike or by car. There is a paid parking lot directly on Neuenfelder Straße at the entrance to the Inselpark. Important: The Inselpark is open all year round and admission is free for all visitors!
