Berlin is much more than just a fantastic collection of popular landmarks and well-known attractions. For example, the city on the Spree has hundreds of parks and green spaces that invite you to relax and explore all year round. Whether for a short break with friends, a long walk with your partner or a relaxing stay with your family, we'll show you which parks you shouldn't miss out on during your trip to Berlin.
There's action in Berlin! Because the multifaceted German capital hardly seems to sleep. Instead, Berlin attractions such as the Brandenburg Gate, Kurfürstendamm, Alexanderplatz, the beautiful Unter den Linden avenue, the cathedral, the Reichstag with its unique dome, the Holocaust memorial and many other Berlin landmarks cast a spell over both locals and visitors. So if you want to visit Germany's flagship metropolis, there is plenty on offer. But to experience Berlin up close, you should not only take a look at the most famous historical sights, but also visit a garden or park or two. After all, Berlin is considered one of the greenest cities in the world. And so a visit to the Spree metropolis is the perfect way to combine sightseeing and relaxation. Travel to Potsdam, for example, and visit the exciting Science Park. Visit the zoo or take a detour to the beautiful palace gardens in Charlottenburg. In addition to fantastic plants and green spaces, you will also find some of the most important baroque gardens in the German capital. Visitors interested in history should also take a long walk along the East Side Gallery to admire the ever-changing graffiti and paintings on the former wall.
The fantastic gardens of Charlottenburg extend to the west of the city. Here you can not only enjoy the fresh air in peace and quiet or relax in the shade, but also have the opportunity to experience the old royal splendor at first hand. Magnificent fountains, ornate broderies, intricate statues and French garden art are just some of the things you can discover along the winding paths in this unique baroque garden.
In the middle of the city, not far from the Victory Column, Brandenburg Gate and various restaurants, this almost 210-hectare green lung invites you to linger. There really is no quicker way to get out into the green in Berlin than with a visit to the Tiergarten.
While this garden was long the preferred urban hunting ground for aristocrats, today Berliners and visitors to the city come here to jog, picnic, barbecue or relax. Not far from Postdamer Platz, there is also a huge playground that makes children's hearts beat faster. Once you've had your fill of fresh air, you can head straight back into the hustle and bustle of the city from Tiergarten. This is because other highlights such as the government district, the Dipolomatenviertel and the Kulturforum are in the immediate vicinity.
When the Wall came down after the Cold War, a section of the former death strip was transformed into today's Mauerpark. You can still sense a touch of GDR flair here today. Apart from that, Mauerpark attracts vintage shoppers with its Sunday flea market and karaoke fans who can put their skills to the test at Bearpit Karaoke. Finally, in Mauerpark you also have the chance to marvel at the remains of the Berlin Wall, which are used by local artists for graffiti.
The Lustgarten is located directly on Museum Island in the heart of the city. The huge lawn in the middle of the capital is perfect for relaxing and observing. Especially during the summer months, there is a lot going on here. The Lustgarten is also the perfect starting point for a visit to Berlin Cathedral or the Altes Museum.
The highest elevation in the city can be found in the picturesque Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg. Whether for a stroll, a picnic, soaking up the sun or a visit to one of the local beer gardens - this park casts a spell over Berliners and tourists alike. However, one absolute highlight that you should definitely not miss during your visit to Viktoriapark is the beautiful waterfall. Especially on hot summer days, dipping your feet in the cool water and relaxing in the beautiful surroundings is the best thing you can do.
A fantastic green space also awaits you in Berlin-Steglitz. In what is probably the largest and most species-rich botanical garden in the world, 43 hectares and more than 20,000 plant species invite you to marvel. So be sure to visit the various greenhouses, the arboretum with its collections of perennials and roses, the exhibition of international plants and, last but not least, the large scent and touch garden, where your senses will be sent on a journey of their own.
Monbijou Park in Berlin's city center is also worth a visit if you want to take a short break after all that sightseeing or during the annual Festival of Lights. A whole four hectares, in the immediate vicinity of Museum Island with its numerous worthwhile museums, the Hackesche Höfe and the New Synagogue, offer plenty of space to recharge your batteries, have a picnic or do some sport.
