Hamburg Archaeological Museum

The Hanseatic city boasts a fascinating selection of first-class museums. But even outside the city gates, visitors don't have to miss out on fascinating museum visits. The Hamburg Archaeological Museum in the district of Harburg, for example, has a fantastic range of attractions for young and old. You can find out more by reading on here.

Discover the Hamburg Archaeological Museum

The archaeological museum in the center of Harburg not only delights adults, but also presents archaeology and the history of the city to children in an exciting way. The former Helms Museum not only houses historical treasures, but also invites its many visitors on a unique exploration tour through the region. In addition to the permanent exhibition, various outposts in the surrounding area of Hamburg also provide plenty of excitement.

Permanent exhibition

Over 2.5 million finds can be admired in the Harburg Museum. This makes the archaeological museum home to the largest collection of prehistoric relics in northern Germany and the permanent exhibition, which was redesigned in 2009, gives visitors a wonderful insight into the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. There are also finds from the early Middle Ages as well as themed areas on materials, food, innovation, mobility, violence and death.

With the help of unique models and exhibits such as the Duvensee paddle, the Ovelgönner roll or the Tangendorf disk brooch, the barrier-free museum sheds light on human cultural development over the last 40,000 years in over 160 display cases. At the same time, visitors interested in culture and history will also find lots of exciting information about the most important cultural monuments in the city of Hamburg and the museum's working methods.

Branch offices

The former Helms Museum is one of the most important archaeological museums in the region. What is special about this institution, however, is that it not only exhibits archaeological finds from Hamburg and the surrounding area, but also promotes archaeological projects in the Hamburg region. For example, the Bishop's Tower and the 12th century cathedral square in Hamburg's old town, the Fischbeker Heide nature trail in Neugraben and the Höhenburg in Hollenstedt are among the museum's outposts that are well worth a visit.

In future, visitors will also be able to experience Harburg's multifaceted city history in the vaulted cellar of Harburg Castle. However, it is not yet clear when the restoration of the building to its listed status will be completed.

Archaeological journey through time for the whole family

From October 5, 2022 to April 2, 2023, the Harburg Museum will be conquered by Playmobil. Oliver Schaffer conjures up fantastic toy landscapes to give families with children in particular an understandable glimpse into the past. From the world's largest dinosaurs to the Roman era and the Middle Ages, it's not just about learning with the colorful figures, but also about playing!

Location & approach

Located directly on the Museumsplatz in Harburg, the two large exhibition rooms invite you to browse and discover. Interested visitors also have the opportunity to visit the library and the Harburg City Museum. If you would like to visit the permanent archaeological exhibition, you will find it on Harburg's Rathausplatz. Both are just 900 meters away from the Hotel Hamburg Harburg.

Both the AMH Museumsplatz and the AMH Harburger Rathausplatz are easy to reach by car or by public transport from the HVV (Hamburger Verkehrsbund). It takes just 10 minutes by bus (line 4210) or train (S3) from Harburg station to the museum.

Alternatively, you can also explore the AMH via various digital content, which is freely available around the clock on the museum's website. Experience Harburg's city history from the comfort of your smartphone. Learn more about archaeology in the region or listen to the entertaining web stories in German to find out more about the myth of Hammaburg or the Harburg bicycle stories as an external visitor. Further content and the latest news about the museum can also be found at any time on the official website. Unfortunately, an English version is not currently available.

Opening hours & tickets

The museum is open all year round from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. You can book tickets conveniently via the AMH website. All you have to do is select your preferred date and time slot and you're ready to go. The tickets are valid for both the museum on Museumsplatz and the facility on Harburg's Rathausplatz.
