Altonaer Volkspark

Experience Altona's green oasis

The current Altona Volkspark covers a total of 205 hectares of green space. The ground-breaking ceremony took place over 100 years ago. As early as 1895, the idea of creating a large green space in Altona, which was densely populated at the time, was born. And so, in 1913, Ferdinand Tutenberg, then head of the garden department, began planning the multifaceted leisure and recreation park in Altona. By 1920, the main work on the new park had been completed, allowing visitors to enjoy the extensive woodlands and natural landscapes in the large park. Whether to relax, take a short break or play sports near the city center, the large park still offers plenty of opportunities for entertainment and recreation in the fresh air, not only for locals but also for tourists. At the same time, the Volkspark, with its well thought-out network of paths and fantastic spaces, is still regarded as a flagship of the reform garden movement.

Attractions

The park offers plenty of space for countless attractions. However, the undisputed highlights of the beautiful Volkspark include the geometrically laid out school garden with its countless ornamental shrub borders, perennials and special gardens, as well as the enormous dahlia garden. The latter has been delighting visitors since 1920 with around 11,000 plants and 600 different dahlia varieties. Nature and plant fans should not miss out on a visit to the Volkspark to explore the fantastic forest nature trail or enjoy the view from one of the park's vantage points over the extensive grounds.

Last but not least, the Volkspark stadium (HSV Arena), which was built in the park in 1925, is one of the main attractions.

Sport in the Volkspark

Sport in the VolksparkA trip to the Altona Volkspark is particularly worthwhile for sports enthusiasts. The designated running trails in the forest park, the first-class climbing tower in Bornmoor and the numerous cycle paths invite you to get active. Whether by bike, inline skates, skateboard or on foot - you can do sports to your heart's content in the Volkspark.

Directly opposite the climbing tower is an excellent children's playground with a cable car, football pitch and skate park, so that both young and old visitors get their money's worth here. Families with small children will also find other playgrounds to let off steam in the park forest, as well as a mini golf course to try out and enjoy. If you want, you can also picnic and relax in peace and quiet on the enormous meadow to the west of August-Kirch-Straße.

And even those who want to use the Altonaer Volkspark to walk their dog will find various designated dog walking zones on site.
