Activities around Willingen: On the road in Sauerland

The city of Willingen has been a household name for ski jumping fans for years. Because the Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen is the largest ski jump in the world that is not a ski flying hill. Almost 40,000 visitors flock to the stadium for the events and cheer on the ski jumpers in the Ski Jumping World Cup.

The Willingen Viaduct is inextricably linked to the history of the city. It is a valley bridge with a length of almost 300 meters. The highest point of the arched bridge is about 31 meters. The bridge was built during the First World War and is still used for rail traffic today.

There is a wide range of options for the television program: The restaurant offers everything from adventure dining to breweries. And if you want to party while on vacation, there are a whole range of party locations that offer something for everyone.

Up high in Sauerland

A prominent point in the region is the Hochheideturm on the Ettelsberg. It opened in 2022 and has a viewing platform that, at 875 meters high, is the highest of its kind in the whole Sauerland region. The tower has an octagonal floor plan and can be reached both on foot on various hiking trails and via the Ettelsberg cable car.

A visit to the Willingen district of Schwalefeld is also recommended. There are numerous castle ruins to marvel at here. In winter, the nature around the village offers numerous winter sports opportunities, and because of the fresh air, the town is also an excellent health resort. Hiking through the Aar Valley forests is ideal, and the region is also ideal for exploring by bike.

If you prefer active summer sports, Willingen offers not only its lakes and hiking trails, but also the Willinger Bike Park. Here you'll find everything a biker needs to be happy, from extreme downhill routes to beginner routes.
