In the heart of Thüringen, enjoy a holiday on the trail of the great poets and thinkers and get to know Germany’s cultural history more closely. The charm and historical significance of Weimar are palpable on every one of its crooked laneways and lively squares. There are museums, castles, parks and countless year-round exhibitions for visitors to admire and experience. Any stay would not be complete without sampling some of the region’s specialties, such as the Thüringer Klöße, onion cake, and of course the famous Bratwurst.
Immerse yourself in all things Goethe and tour the house where he lived for almost 50 years as well as the adjacent Goethe National Museum. The house was built in the Baroque style, and remodelled by Goethe in his own style embracing classicist aesthetic ideals.
The tourist information office is located here, and guided city tours take place twice a day. If you prefer to explore the city on your own, taking the route from the market square to the Town Hall, and then along Schillerstraße as far as the theatre is highly recommended. Weimar is captivating with its colourful mix of neo-Gothic buildings and Renaissance-era houses.
Enjoy spending a few hours in Weimar’s green oasis. The highlights are the views, Goethe’s Garden House and the Roman House. The large park is on the edge of Weimar old town, and is perfect for longer walks along the Ilm river.
