Sélestat: the story of an Alsatian city

Traversed by the Ill (the main river in Alsace), Sélestat developed in the Middle Ages thanks to its commercial port. It transported a wide variety of products such as wine, fish, grains, salt and glass. During this period, the city also became a considerable religious centre with many establishments founded by different orders such as the Dominicans and Franciscans.

An important town in Alsace, Sélestat acquired a first set of ramparts during the Renaissance, which would then be reinforced by Vauban in the seventeenth century. This strategically positioned fortified military city was besieged several times during the Napoleonic Wars. In the end, the ramparts were destroyed in the nineteenth century, during the return of Alsace-Moselle to Germany. Attached to France since the Thirty Years' War, the region then switched to the Prussian side. It would not become French again until the end of the First World War.

From then on, Sélestat established itself as an industrial city. It is also a major service centre for central Alsace.

The third major Alsatian municipality after Colmar and Strasbourg for its rich medieval heritage, it was designated City of Art and History in 2016.

Visit Sélestat

Relatively unknown to tourists, Sélestat is a charming little city that’s perfect to wander around. It’s home to some real cultural and natural gems worth discovering. Stroll along the streets and small squares of the town to admire the half-timbered houses and their multicoloured facades. Some date back to the Middle Ages! In the tanners' quarter, you can see narrow-gabled dwellings with sloping roofs characteristic of this profession.

The city centre features many admirable monuments. Enter St. George's Church to admire the stunning fifteenth-century stained-glass windows that illuminate the choir. At the gate of the first city wall stands the Witches' Tower. This 174-m-high structure was used as an observation post and then as a prison in the Middle Ages. A witness to the town’s commercial and military past, theSainte-Barbe arsenal served, in turn, as a storage place for goods (wheat, tobacco, hops) and a depot for weapons and ammunition. The building has been completely restored and its vault now hosts many shows and concerts.

Next to St. George's Church is the hôtel d'Ebersmunster, a magnificent testament to the city's Renaissance architecture. Featuring a superb limestone spiral staircase (with a central swirling section, it also has an imposing, richly decorated gate.

As for monuments, the humanist library is certainly the highlight of the visit of the city. An emblematic building of Sélestat, it houses a collection of manuscripts and prints unique in the world, bequeathed by the famous humanist Beatus Rhenanus. There is also a beautiful model reconstituting the city in the sixteenth century. Though it is forbidden to touch the works on display, large touch-screens allow you to browse them virtually. A visit here is simply not to be missed!

For a gourmet outing, go to the Maison du Pain d'Alsace: a museum-style tour takes you through the history of bread in all its forms. On the programme: workshops, feature events and tastings! And if you're still feeling peckish, enjoy the local cuisine on the terrace of the bars, restaurants and tea rooms in the city centre.

Things to see near Sélestat

The municipal area is part of a large nature reserve protecting the Illwald forest. Rich in fauna and flora, various animal species (wild deer, birds, beavers) have made a home there. A walking trail starting from Sélestat allows you to discover this extraordinary natural area, traversed by different waterways.

15 km from Sélestat lies the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, an Alsatian castle dating from the twelfth century. Built on a rocky outcrop, its walls have an irregular structure because they follow the shape of the terrain. Several notable bastions defend the fortress, including the massive large bastion and the star-shaped bastion intended to protect the fortress from external shots. Inside, the Kaiser's hall, the emperor's cabinet, the weapons room and the keep are perfectly preserved. Here, you can look at furniture, ammunition and rich period decor.

Our hotels in the Grand Est area also allow you to discover the Alsace wine route and its 7 grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot noir, Pinot gris or Pinot blanc, Muscat and Sylvaner). Discover the flower-bedecked villages nestled on the slopes of this superb cultural and gastronomic trail! In September and October, the touristic harvest allows you to share the daily life of vintners and experience truly special moments.

Near Obernai, the convent of Mont Sainte-Odile, dedicated to the patron saint of Alsace, attracts many visitors and pilgrims every year. Located in the heart of an extraordinary wooded environment, it dominates the plain of Alsace and offers a breathtaking view of the Black Forest. The sanctuary dedicated to the Saint contains her tomb and several chapels. Leaving the park, take the hiking trails to reach a miraculous spring and the mysterious pagan ramparts built below.

Events and entertainment

Mixing music and wine, the Alsace Wine Fair is known for its festive atmosphere, shows and great atmosphere. It delights both experienced and beginner oenologists. Just half an hour from Sélestat, the city hosts the annual Colmar International Festival, an internationally renowned classical music festival.
