A site of ancient religious activity for the Gauls, the Montmélian hill was home to a castrum in Roman times, before being evangelized by Saint Rieul in the 2nd century. The village of Saint-Witz dates back to the 8th century. The first royal castle was built by Hugues Capet on the sacred mount. This hill is left in ruins by the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century, which caused disruption to the village. It became a crossroads between Paris and Fontaine-Chaalis. Saint-Witz specializes in plasterwork, tile making, and milling.
