Les Sables-d'Olonne as we know it today is a young town. Formed in 2019, it was established following the merge of three cities: Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and finally Les Sables-d'Olonne.
However, the town of Les Sables-d'Olonne dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, it was a small but vibrant fishing port in a bay which was already well sheltered. Unfortunately, the bay began to silt up. Prince Savary of Mauléon, a lord of Bas-Poitou, therefore decided to create a new port in the dunes of Olonne, where the modern-day Chaume district is situated. Olonne and La Chaume later merged to give rise to Les Sables-d'Olonne.
A maritime city par excellence, make the most of your stay in Les Sables-d'Olonne and go for a swim! Several beaches are available to you: Grande Plage, Sauveterre beach, Dunes beach or Les Sables-d'Olonne Plage. Put down your beach towel, and enjoy the view and the sun!
Don't miss the Remblai esplanade either: a long seaside walk, where you can discover 19th century villas.
You can also enjoy the fishing port and its fish market, or Port Olona. The latter is a marina that hosts many nautical events, the most famous of which is undoubtedly the Vendée Globe. Atmosphere on the docks guaranteed!
In the city center, you will find the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of the Abbey of Saint Croix, as well as the Shell Museum, where you can discover a most unusual collection. Tropical shells, corals, clams: let yourself be taken in by the thousand and one colors of these natural works of art.
The Hospital Blockhaus museum will take you back to a not so distant past. The building, which has remained intact since its construction by the Germans, is dedicated to the Second World War in Vendée.
You can also enjoy the religious heritage of the city: visit the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port church built in 1646, or the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Espérance chapel built in 1850.
Do you want to discover an unusual side to Les Sables-d'Olonne? Get ready to travel into a fantasy world as you set foot into the pedestrian alleys of the Penotte Island neighborhood. At the bend of narrow streets, you can admire the facades of houses decorated with mosaics, made from shells. This enchanted world is the work of an artist from the town, Danièle Arnaud-Aubin.
Not far away, you'll find Rue de l'Enfer, which holds the record for being the narrowest street in the world. But keep your eyes peeled: you might pass by without seeing it!
Are you struggling to decide whether to visit a castle or a lighthouse? Go to Château Saint-Clair, next to the Chaume pier, whose keep houses a lighthouse. The keep is also known as “Arundel Tower”.
Need to unwind? Several spas in town know how to work wonders, whether it's the Orangerie or the Roches Noires.
You won't be disappointed with your vacation on the Atlantic coast of France!
Hiking or cycling: les Sables-d'Olonne and neighboring towns offer you great hiking and cycling trails along the Olonne coast. This is a very pleasant way to enjoy the Vendée landscapes. At Château-d'Olonne, take a break at the Puits d’Enfer. The well is a rock fault perpendicular to the waterfront, about ten meters deep. Legend has it that when the wind blows, you can hear the cries of a damned sailor.
Don't miss the Saltworks, typical of the region, and Pont de la Salaire at the gates of Brem-sur-Mer.
Visit the Château de Pierre-Levée dating back to the 18th century, which owes its name to two menhirs located nearby. Take in the beautiful scent of the flowers in the castle's wonderful French gardens.
And if you want to discover the oceans, a visit to the Vendée aquarium is ideal for both young and old.
The different districts of the city are full of bars and restaurants whose menus are varied to suit everyone’s tastes. Whether by the beach, in La Chaume or in Arago, you will find restaurants offering traditional Vendée cuisine, seafood or world cuisine. Whether eating in or taking away, you will find what you are looking for if you fancy a gourmet stay in Les Sables-d'Olonne.
