Discover the city of Lieusaint

From the 10th century, the village was a royal territory preserved for hunting. In March 1790, Lieusaint was the chosen location for astronomers Delambre and Méchain to determine the length of a metre. After remaining a small, unknown village for a long time, Lieusaint saw a sharp population increase at the beginning of the 1970s when the State integrated it into the newly formed city of “Melun-Sénart”. It went from having just 657 inhabitants in 1975 to more than 10,000 today. In 2000, the construction of the Carré Sénart Shopping Centre brought Lieusaint into a new era.

Lieusaint is a place of beautiful greenery: The Ru des Hauldres river. Once a small, stagnant stream, it has transformed into 30 hectares of vegetation and lakes. If you love nature walks, take a stroll through the stunning Forest of Sénart, located to the north-west. An avenue of greenery crosses the city, connecting the Sports Park to the Ru des Hauldres via the Town Hall, church and Meridian gardens. Passionate bird watchers should visit the Espace Naturel de la Motte nature reserve.

Saint-Quintien Church was built in the 12th century and remains the oldest monument in the city. This catholic church was named after Saint Quintien, the city’s own patron saint, who lived the life of a recluse in the Lieusaint forest in the 7th century. The Lieusaint Town Hall is the former main building of the Alfroy family’s nurseries, where the plane trees on the Champs-Élysées were originally grown. Lieusaint is also known for its still standing distance marker, erected in 1790, which determines the length of a metre.

Every year in the last week of May, the inhabitants of Lieusaint come together to celebrate a local legend during La Fête de la Dame Bleue (the Festival of the Blue Lady). This fairy guardian was honoured by Gallic tribes in the surrounding areas during December. The Music Festival in June always hosts a pleasant party atmosphere. The Town Hall gardens hosts Mercredis de l’Été (Summer Wednesdays), popular celebrations that take place from the beginning of July to the end of August. Village Sportif puts the inhabitants of Lieusaint to the test over the course of a week by offering a range of different sports activities.
