Neustädt Church is one of the three large inner-city churches in Erlangen’s historic city centre. It’s the church tower’s unique architecture that makes it impressive. It comprises four sections. On top of each of these sections is a platform with a tower segment in the centre. So it looks like the church tower is divided into four parts. The construction of the Hugenot Church can be traced back to an influx of French protestants. At the end of the 17th century, Louis 14th banned the observance of the protestant faith in France. At that point the Hugenots left France, and the then Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth offered to have a new settlement built just for them: the Erlanger Neustadt. The refugees happily accepted this offer, and a few years later started to build the church, which due to its impressive architecture remains a fascinating one to this day.
