Welcome to Emmerich: Rhine City on the Lower Rhine

Emmerich am Rhein welcomes you with a blend of Rhenish ease, impressive architecture, and stunning nature. Located directly on the Dutch border in the Kleve district, the city offers a charming combination of river romance, historical heritage, and modern leisure activities – ideal for those seeking relaxation, explorers, and families.

Emmerich: Discover History and Culture on the Rhine

As one of the oldest cities on the Lower Rhine, Emmerich looks back on a vibrant history. The Gothic St. Martin's Church from the 15th century dominates the cityscape and invites you to take a little journey through time with its impressive architecture. Right next door, you'll find Christ Church, formerly St. Aldegundis, whose simple elegance showcases the diversity of religious architecture.

A cultural center of the city is the PAN Kunstforum Niederrhein, located in a former church. Here, modern art and sacred atmosphere meet. Directly adjacent is the Emmerich City Museum, which brings the region's history to life – from Roman times to the present day.

Romance and History, Emmerich's Old Town

The old town of Emmerich exudes Rhenish charm with historic facades, narrow streets, and lovingly restored buildings. A special place is the Koekkoek House, birthplace of the Dutch-German painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. Today, it serves as a memorial and exhibition space for his landscape paintings. In the city center, cozy cafes and small shops invite you to linger.

Emmerich and Its Idyllic Natural Landscapes

For nature lovers, Emmerich is a true paradise. The Rhine Park is located directly on the promenade and offers plenty of space for walks, picnics, or simply relaxing with a view of the river. The Emmericher Ward, a protected floodplain and wetland area that provides habitat for many bird species, is a bit more natural – ideal for nature observations and quiet moments away from the hustle and bustle.

Those who enjoy being active will find numerous well-developed cycling and hiking trails around Emmerich, leading through fields, meadows, and along the Rhine. The Rhine Cycle Route is particularly popular, promising fantastic views and a fresh breeze. The nearby Eltenberg – a rare elevation in the otherwise flat Lower Rhine region – also invites you to take short trips with shady paths and views over the region. Here, the nature around Emmerich shows its particularly diverse and peaceful side.

Cultural Heritage and Events in Emmerich

Emmerich not only lives from its history – it also offers a lot culturally. The PAN Kunstforum hosts regularly changing exhibitions, and the City Museum organizes lectures and guided tours.

On guided city tours, you can delve even deeper into the past. The city becomes especially lively during festivals such as the Rhine Festival or the summer events on the promenade. Public art, such as modern sculptures along the Rhine promenade, brings culture directly outdoors.

Emmerich also has a lot to offer musically: From classical concerts in St. Martin's Church to open-air events in the summer, there is something for many tastes. Local choirs, orchestras, and music groups enrich the city's cultural life with regular performances – often in atmospheric, historic settings.

Another highlight is the traditional Emmerich Martinsmarkt in autumn. With lovingly decorated stalls, regional crafts, and atmospheric lighting, the city center transforms into a place full of encounters and cozy atmosphere. Such events make it clear: Emmerich is a city where community, tradition, and cultural engagement are actively lived.

Leisure Activities and Destinations in and Around Emmerich

For active guests, Emmerich offers numerous opportunities: The marina is a popular meeting point for leisure skippers and walkers, while children can let off steam in the adventure park.

A special destination is the Elten district, idyllically located on the Eltenberg. From up here, you have a fantastic view over the Rhine valley. The district also houses the baroque Borghees Castle, which is now used as a cultural center with exhibitions and concerts.

Cyclists also get their money's worth around Emmerich. The city is located directly on the Rhine Cycle Route, one of the most popular long-distance cycle routes in Europe. Whether a leisurely tour along the river or a sporty ride through the surrounding area – here, exercise can be wonderfully combined with nature experiences. Those who wish can stop at small farm cafes along the way or enjoy the view of the water.

Families can also enjoy an excursion to the Emmericher Ward – there, not only can rare birds be observed, but also small nature adventures can be experienced. Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can end the day with a Rhine cruise and discover the region from the water. Emmerich offers the right leisure activities for every interest – from active vacations to relaxing breaks.
