Several standing stones bear witness to the settlement of the area in prehistoric times. In the middle ages, the city was home to one of the 16 special courts responsible for collecting salt tax in Anjou. Under the Ancien Régime, Cholet took off in a big way with the development of the textile industry. The moist clay-rich soil is particularly suitable for linen and hemp cultivation.
Cholet, which is known as “the capital of the handkerchief”, converts to shoe production at the end of the 19th century. From 1950 onwards further industries set up for business there.

You can’t miss the many standing stones, in particular the Menhir de la Garde, which stands at the entrance of the Jardin du Mail (3.6 metres tall, with a circumference of 6.5 metres) and the Pierre Plate standing stone.

Among the many events hosted throughout the year in Cholet, two of the highlights are the Cholet carnival, which attracts some 100,000 visitors each year (in February/March), and the Festival des Arlequins, which takes place in the spring. In July-August, Cholet dances to the beat of l'Eté Cigalefestival. In November it’s time for ZEClectiques, a major event dedicated to contemporary music.
