Several standing stones bear witness to the settlement of the area in prehistoric times. In the middle ages, the city was home to one of the 16 special courts responsible for collecting salt tax in Anjou. Under the Ancien Régime, Cholet took off in a big way with the development of the textile industry. The moist clay-rich soil is particularly suitable for linen and hemp cultivation.
Cholet, which is known as “the capital of the handkerchief”, converts to shoe production at the end of the 19th century. From 1950 onwards further industries set up for business there.
