Châtellerault built up around a crossing site at the confluence of the Vienne and Clain rivers. The town was founded in 952 by the lord of Airaud. Its privileged location on the road to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle fostered its development. After suffering from an outbreak of the plague in 1630, the town experienced a great famine in 1661. In the 19th century, the construction of the Weapons Factory breathed new life into the town. In terms of urban planning, Châtellerault is a “city in the countryside”, where the forest rubs shoulders with the town centre.
Châtellerault includes magnificent landscapes, from the Natural Reserve of the Pinail to the Vallée de la Vienne, as well as the Vallée du Clain or the Pointe de Forclan. The state forest hosts a lovely arboretum. And to discover all the rich diversity of the region’s ornithological fauna, you can visit the Saint Cyr Reserve. As for sport lovers, they can take part in a number of activities in nature during their stay: hikes, bike or canoe rides, ULMs and more... If you love swimming, discover the large competitive pool at the Châtellerault swimming complex.
During your stay, you can visit the Church of Saint-Jacques, whose construction began in the year 1008. And be sure not to miss the “Manu”, which hosts an automotive, motorcycle and bicycle museum.
