Humans have lived in Brétigny-sur-Orge since Protohistory. Excavations have proven the existence of a Gallo-Roman city. In the Middle Ages, the land was passed from lord to lord. The construction of the Brétigny-Tours railroad, in 1843, cut the municipality in two and gave way to new markets for farmers. In 1938, a military aerial park was built in Brétigny-sur-Orge and Plessis-Pâté. Up until 2009 this park has housed a flight test center (which earned it the nickname of the "cradle of aviation"). Up until 2006, it also housed the departmental center of Météo France. The post-war period was one of massive urbanisation, and the city experienced very rapid demographic growth.
