There are traces of human occupation in Bourges dating as far back as the First Iron Age. After Caesar’s conquest, Avaricum was the object of an immense city planning project. It was during the Carolingian period that the marshes first began to be cultivated. Bourges became part of the royal lands in 1100 and its fortifications were built in the 12th century. The city experienced significant growth under the patronage of Jean de Berry, Charles VII and Jacques Coeur. In 1487 more than a third of the city was destroyed during the Great Fire of La Madeleine. The timber-framed houses were rebuilt exactly as they were before the fire. During the First Empire, Bourges became a high-profile institutional centre.
