Built on a granite hill, Avranches has been populated since ancient times (there is evidence of a human presence dating from from the 9th century BC). A Gallo-Roman capital, Avranches thrived up until the start of the barbarian invasions. After being Christianised, the city experienced a significant rise in status under Norman rule. It became a royal city in 1204. After the internecine struggles of the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion, Avranches lost its diocese during the Revolution. In the 19th century, the city grew thanks to a population boom. Largely destroyed during the Second World War, Avranches has since been extensively rebuilt.
