With its more than 2000-year history, Agen has existed since 400 B.C., when the Nitiobriges first settled on Ermitage Hill. After a period of significant economic growth during the Middle Ages and consequently being fought over by the kings of France and England (due to Agen’s privileged geographic location and its position as a border city), the city began to develop its intellectual influence during the Renaissance. 
Agen eventually turned to the weaving of fabric and the making of homespun cloth, as well as tanning and glove-making. These activities were severely affected by the Industrial Revolution.
