With its more than 2000-year history, Agen has existed since 400 B.C., when the Nitiobriges first settled on Ermitage Hill. After a period of significant economic growth during the Middle Ages and consequently being fought over by the kings of France and England (due to Agen’s privileged geographic location and its position as a border city), the city began to develop its intellectual influence during the Renaissance.
Agen eventually turned to the weaving of fabric and the making of homespun cloth, as well as tanning and glove-making. These activities were severely affected by the Industrial Revolution. Today, the city takes advantage of its rural and agricultural environment, having returned to a focus on farming.
Get your fill of nature by taking a walk in the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Frayère d’Alos, a migratory fish that reproduces in the Garonne river. The 48-hectare reserve offers a chance to see several dozen species of fish. You might also get lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a grey heron, a great spotted woodpecker, a Caspian gull or a little egret.
The riverbanks are the perfect place to enjoy a pleasant, relaxing walk. There are more than 9 kilometres of paths accessible to the whole family.
The Cathédrale Saint-Caprais and the Eglise Notre-Dame des Jacobins... Lovers of religious art won’t want to miss the city’s two most beautiful monuments. You can admire the collections of art at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Agen, which regularly offers fascinating expositions. During your strolls, you will also discover the old episcopal palace, which is now home to the Agen prefecture.
In August, the city streets come to life during the Grand Pruneau Show. This festival includes music, street performances and tastings of local specialities. All summer long the Estivales d'Agen offer free concerts, circuits to discover local flavours, touring shows, bicycle rides and more. Among the other must-see events: the Festival de Danse d'Agen in June, along with the theatre-focussed Festival d'Agen and the Festival Tropical d'Agen, both held in July.
