Your stay in the heart of the Walloon capital
Namur, a Walloon AND European capital
The City of Namur became the capital of Wallonia in 1986. Ideally located between Charleroi, Brussels and Liège, it hosts the seat of the Walloon Parliament as well as many other national or regional bodies (ministerial cabinets, etc.).
But Namur also has international scope: it’s a true European crossroads, located at the junction of major motorways such as the E411 - serving Brussels (60 km away), Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Basel - or the E42, which connects Trier to Dunkirk, via Lille, in an East-West direction.
Its railway station and port infrastructure also give it a prominent place in the passenger and freight transport sector in Europe.
Namur heritage worth discovering
Located at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse rivers, sheltered by a rocky outcrop that also serves as an observation point, the geographical assets of this place undoubtedly encouraged the first nomads to settle here from prehistoric times. Then Namur became urbanized under Roman influence: from the first century, a port was built there, allowing it to trade with the rest of the empire. This is the beginning of the rise of Namur; the city grew, became wealthier and, coveted by many, became fortified.
Designed by engineers Vauban and Coehoorn, the citadel was initially the residence of the counts of the city. The castle of Namur and its dam wall were joined, over time, by a collegiate church, accompanied by the houses of the canons who officiated there, chapels, a bakery, etc. The castle gradually became a city within a city, increasing its fortifications over the course of sieges and new regimes, until its demilitarization in 1891.
Nowadays, the citadel can be visited from the outside, to discover 2000 years of history around the curves of its bastions and terraces: each stop will allow you to admire a breathtaking view of the city of Namur ! It is also possible to go around it with a small train so you don’t miss any must-see elements, such as the statue ‘Searching for Utopia’, for example: an imposing representation of a turtle in gilded bronze, ridden by its creator Jan Fabre, at the end of the citadel.
Inside, the Terra Nova Visitor Centre will help you discover all the historical and architectural richness of the place. Not to mention the highlight of the visit, the 500 meters of completely restored underground tunnels (one of the largest networks in Europe), all highlighted by a very beautiful design, full of sound and light.
Take advantage of the cable car, inaugurated in 2021, to reach the citadel from the old town of Namur in just a few minutes with, once again, superb photos to be taken!
Discover old Namur and its cultural riches
The old quarter of Namur deserves a visit: stroll through its entirely pedestrian streets and admire its cobbled roads, old brick facades, antique Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings (on rue des Carmes and rue des Croisiers) and its quays full of charm. Many buildings bear witness to the golden age of Namur and its splendour: the Bourse and its neo-classical façade, the Royal Theatre, the Belfry (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999), the Saint-Aubain Cathedral, the Saint-Loup Church, and more.
Lovers of antiques and beautiful objects, be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum and Museum of Decorative Arts (gathered within the Les Bateliers museum centre), the TreM.a - Museum of Ancient Arts or the African Museum.
Our favourite? The Félicien Rops Provincial Museum which traces the life of this singular Namur artist and jack-of-all-trades, illustrator, painter and cartoonist. A real provocateur, this artist created many pamphlets and didn’t hesitate to denounce the failings of his contemporaries. His work Pornokrates, also entitled ‘The Lady with the Pig’, testifies to this: is it a criticism of women governed by lust under the symbol of the pig? Or of men, held on a leash by his desire for women? Everyone is free to make up their own mind.
After your strolls, it's time to relax with a stop at the small square of the Vegetable market: you can have lunch, dinner or just a drink in one of the many cafés and restaurants that are located there.
What events are must-sees in Namur
Namur is a dynamic and festive city where many concerts, plays, festivals, exhibitions, etc. take place.
Among the Namur institutions, let us mention the magnificent Royal Theatre of Namur for the quality of its offerings as for its architecture, and the Delta, formerly the House of Culture, with its 6000 m2 of exhibition and performance halls, enhanced with large event spaces, a panoramic terrace, gardens, etc.
But the city itself is also a permanent exhibition, with a whole street-art route to discover! More than a dozen Belgian and international artists have already participated in this project, which has kept growing over the years.
And for those who appreciate the atmosphere of major popular events, don’t miss the festivals of Wallonia! Every year, on the third Sunday of September, they commemorate Belgian independence in 1830.
The city then hosts many concerts, parades and folklore shows in the city centre of Namur.
See you soon in the capital of Wallonia and at your B&B HOTEL Namur!
