The name of Belfort first appeared in sources in 1226. The fortified city developed over the next several decades and was given its “letter of franchise” in 1307. Later becoming a part of the Austrian Empire due to changing alliances, Belfort’s progress was delayed by the Thirty Years War. Enemy troops laid siege to the city several times, leaving Belfort severely damaged after the war. The city became French again in 1648 and was fortified according to Vauban’s designs. Belfort’s heroic defence of the city during the siege of 1870 meant that the city remained French. At the end of the 19th century, the city experienced anew period of growth.
Just a few minutes from the city centre, the Etang des Forges offers numerous outdoor activities, as does the Ballon d'Alsace, where you can find everything you’re looking for: skiing, snowboarding, zorb balls, a zip line, sledding, dogsled rides and more. Of course, there are also countless activities to be enjoyed during the summer as well. Just 6 kilometres from Belfort, Lake Malsaucy offers a large number of sports and outdoor activities between April and October. The site is home to a House of the environment, where various expositions and activities are organised regularly.
During your stay in Belfort you will be able to visit the Citadel, designed by Vauban, and the Cathédrale Saint-Christophe, walk through the old city, admire Bartholdi’s Lion of Belfort, a symbol of the French resistance in Belfort in 1870-1871, and much more.
