Back in the Middle Ages Douai was mentioned as the property of the Counts of Flanders. The collégiale Saint-Amé, the first place of worship, was built in the same time period in 950. The city was long fought over between the King of France and the Count of Flanders. It became Flemish for good in 1369. In the 17th century, when Douai was a very prosperous city famous for its wool industry, King Louis XIV invaded Flanders. After a long siege, Douai became French and was to remain so. After having sustained significant damage during the two World Wars, the city was gradually rebuilt.

Douai has several parks and green spaces, whi8ch are perfect for taking a walk. Just a stone’s throw from the city centre, you can enjoy the Parc Jean Vernis, which is divided into several themed gardens with more than 7,300 plants and a body of water spanning five hectares. For the children, the Parc Bertin is perfect: wooded and spanning more than six hectares, it comprises more than 13,000 shrubs, with large trees and a lake. The banks of the Scarpe are a nice place to take a walk in summer and winter alike. Lastly, don’t miss the Réserve naturelle régionale de Douai Wagnonville and its very rich flora and fauna.

Classed as a “ville d'art et d'histoire” (city of art and history), Douai has held onto its fortifications, which are on display at the musée de la Chartreuse and its armoury, both being relics from its military past. You can admire the beauty of several monuments left over from the old city walls, such as the Porte de Valenciennes, theTour des Damesand Porte d’Arras. If you like church buildings, don’t miss the Beffroi de Douai, which was built from the 14th century onwards and is 54 metres tall. Its chimes are no less impressive, with some 72 bells. The Collégiale Saint-Pierre de Douai, the Couvent des Franciscains and the Collégiale Saint-Amé also form part of this vast estate.

In early March each year, Douai’s engineering students stage the short film festival named Illumines at the Centre culturel de l’Hippodrome de Douai. The fêtes de Gayant are very popular in Douai: in early July each year the Gayant family of carnival giants come out for the traditional procession through the city to the beat of the drums. A funfair marks the occasion on Place du Barlet. Still in July, children take centre stage with the Festival des Binbins: there they can enjoy shows, fairground rides, reading workshops and clown performances.
