Discover the town of Vannes

First administered by the Romans, this Venetii town, occupied by its seafaring Celtics, became an important Catholic centre during the first millennium. Promoted to the status of capital of the Kingdom of Brittany, it was the setting of the union in the 16th century. Built in the form of an amphitheatre around the Gulf of Morbihan, the town developed around the ramparts that surround the Old Town, which is a pedestrian zone today.

The best things to see and do in the Vannes region

Leaving from Vannes, you can take an excursion on a boat to the heart of the ‘Petite Mer’, the Gulf of Morbihan. It is home to two natural gems, the Île-aux-Moines and the Île d’Arz. Further to the west, you will also find the Quiberon Peninsula. To the south of Vannes, in the Loire-Atlantique, you can visit the Guérandais salt marshes and the salt workers’ villages alongside them, such as Kervalet or Saillé.

The old medieval town of Vannes will take your breath away with its distinctive architectural heritage of half-timber houses dating back to the 15th century. They encircle the Saint-Pierre Cathedral. Vannes’ ramparts, some parts of which date back to the Roman Occupation and the majority from the Middle Ages, are a must-see. You won’t want to miss the Château de l’Hermine nestled within. The marina is also a particularly relaxing place to take time out in an exotic location.

Among the many events that set the pace of life in Vannes, you and your family could take part in the Trail des Remparts de Vannes, an urban race around the town that takes place on the first Sunday in July. If you are more interested in cultural events, the Festi’Vannes music festival takes over the centre in April and Jazz à Vannes lasts all summer long. Traditional celebrations are also plentiful with the Tradi Deiz, a Celtic dance festival in April, and the Fêtes Historiques, which recounts the significant periods of local history in July.
