Built along the banks of the Rhône, where the Drôme and Isère valleys meet, Valence is an imposing Gallo-Roman stronghold with its own commercial port. Its city wall offered protection whilst its perfect positioning allowed it to develop quickly. It became a place of pilgrimage along the Road to Santiago in the Middle Ages. Valence’s Old Town is home to many relics of the rich history harboured by this capital of the Drôme region. Starting with the Saint-Apollinaire Cathedral in the Place des Clercs, which was built in its Roman style in the 11th century. The Renaissance also left behind some beautiful facades, such as the Maison des Têtes and the Pendentif, a funerary monument. Another must-see is the bandstand at the Champ de Mars, which acted as the model for Raymond Peynet to draw his famous lovers!

In February, on Valentine’s Day, the Peynet bandstand hosts Valence Fête l’Amour, with its 4 days celebrating love. Each year, in the south of the city, Porte-Lès-Valence organises DEHORS!, a lively theatre festival that brings different regions together. To the north, Bourg-Lès-Valence hosts the Vice et Versa Festival, which focuses on celebrating differences and awakening the senses through artistic expression.
