Rastatt is not only known for its impressive historical buildings and architectural masterpieces, but also for its diverse cultural landscape and picturesque parks and gardens. Whether you are interested in historical sites from the Baroque period to the Baden Revolution of 1848/49, want to savour the local cuisine or simply want to experience the beauty of nature - in Rastatt you will find all this and more.

The market square in Rastatt

Rastatt's market square, embedded in the majestic castle axis and flanked by the imposing residence of the castle, is a must-see. This baroque ensemble forms the heart of the town and reflects a rich past. In addition to the castle as a landmark, historic buildings such as the Old Town Hall with the city administration and St Mary's Church characterise the cityscape.

The regular weekly market is a special tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. Local traders offer fresh produce from the region and create a lively atmosphere that attracts visitors and locals alike. All in all, the market square is a place that combines past and present and is an important part of urban life in Rastatt.

Historic buildings and architecture

Rastatt Residential Palace

Rastatt Palace, also known as the baroque residence, is considered an outstanding example of baroque architecture in Baden-Württemberg. Built around 1700 by the Italian court architect Domenico Egidio Rossi on behalf of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden, it once served as a magnificent residence for the margraves. As the oldest Baroque residence on the Upper Rhine, it was built in the style of the French model Versailles to emphasise the power and splendour of the ruler of Baden.

The building is not only architecturally impressive, but also historically significant: the Peace of Rastatt, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession, was concluded here in 1714. Despite numerous alterations and renovations over the centuries, the residence has retained its majestic charm. The state rooms, above all the impressive Hall of Ancestors, bear witness to past splendour and tell the story of the margraves of Baden. Today, it serves as a museum and an impressive event venue that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Rastatt casemates

The Rastatt casemates are a historic fortress structure beneath Rastatt Castle. Casemates are underground vaults or corridors that were often used as storage or shelter rooms in fortresses and fortifications. In Rastatt, the casemates were built in the 18th century as part of the Baroque fortifications to provide protection from enemy attacks and to serve as storage and accommodation rooms for the soldiers.

A tour of the casemates on the Südring with the flank battery and the exterior of Cavalier 1 is a unique experience. Visitors have the opportunity to wander through the winding corridors and vaults and learn more about the function and significance of this underground facility. The special attraction of this tour lies in the fact that the rooms are only explored in dimmed light (the "Funzel") as they were back then, thus recreating the atmosphere of the time. The casemates offer a fascinating insight into the architecture and defence strategies of bygone times and are a popular excursion destination for history buffs and tourists in Rastatt.
