Discovering the city of Pau

Founded in the second half of the 11th century, Pau became a ‘Castelnau’ (fortified castle town) in the 13th century. In 1512, the kings of Navarre made the town their capital. In 1589, Henri III of Navarre, a native of this region, rose to the throne under the name of Henri IV. After a revolt in 1619, the city, along with the entire Béarn and Navarre regions, were adjoined to the kingdom of France. The city became urbanized and saw a variety of religious orders and civil administrations established here. Pau became a holiday destination where European high society came to spend the winter. At the end of the 1940s, the discovery of an oil and gas in Lacq brought new economic growth to the area.

Pau is located just a stone’s throw from the Pyrenees and their magnificent landscapes. Numerous trails and hiking paths crisscross the region, like the path of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle or the Voie d'Arles. Enjoy your stay in our Pau Lescar B&B hotel to discover the landscapes and natural heritage of the region.

The Church of Saint-Martin, the Church of Saint-Jacques, the Church of Notre-Dame, the Chapel of the Couvent des Réparatrices, the Château de Pau, the Tour de la Monnaie, the Parliament of Navarre, the Hôtel de Gassion, the Palais Beaumont... Pau is host to a remarkable historical heritage. During your stay, you may also visit the Cité des Pyrénées, to find out all there is to know about the mountains and Pyrenees lifestyle!

Numerous events are held throughout the year. If you stay in Pau during the winter, don’t miss the Béarnais Carnival!
