What to do around Marseille

Do you already know Marseille, its Old Port, and the church of Notre-Dame de La Garde? Well, what else can you do around Marseille? Here is an overview of things to do in Marseille and more importantly, things to do around Marseille while staying in one of our affordable Marseille hotels.

Nature and culture around the Phoenician City

Just a few minutes by car from Marseille, some beautiful rock faces stretch out their arms to you: don’t miss the ones at Sormiou, En-Vau, Port-Pin, and Sugiton. The Calanques National Park, a magical place, offers clean, natural turquoise waters and secret beaches.

You can also take a boat to discover some of the islands off the coast, some of which are visible from the harbours. The Frioul, Planier, and Riou archipelagos have many islands.

Follow the Route des Crêtes linking the town of Cassis with La Ciotat. Take time to stop along the road, which is perfect for tourism. The landscape and views are mind-boggling.

In Cassis, which seems like a typical little village, take a walk in the lanes, enjoy a meal in a good restaurant serving Provençal specialities, and discover its old castle.

In La Ciotat, you can join a guided tour or explore as you wish, discovering its harbour, as well as the heart of the town, which is full of history.

Artistic towns to visit around Marseille

In Aubagne, you can find out about typical objets d’art by Provençal craftsmen: santons. They first appeared in nativity scenes in the 18th century. Now, they are an integral part of the history of Provence. Potters' workshops and the heritage of santon craftsmen have made this town the Cité de l’Art Santonnier.

For painting, visit Aix-en-Provence to follow in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne, a great French painter famous for his many paintings of Sainte Victoire mountain. You’ll find some of his masterpieces in one of the town’s museum, the Musée Granet. If you stay at our hotel at Marseille L’Estaque, you’ll only be 30 minutes away by car.

Other hotel options in and around the wonderful city of Marseille include the B&B HOTEL Marseille Prado Parc des Expositions, which is surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and bars, the B&B HOTEL Marseille Parc Chanot, which is close to the football stadium, the B&B HOTEL Marseille Centre La Joliette, which is close to ferry connections, and B&B HOTEL Marseille La Valentine Saint-Menet, which is towards the east of the city.

If you have an early flight, we recommend staying at one of the hotels near Marseille airport. Should the magic of this Mediterranean location in the South of France capture your heart, try one of the B&B Marseille beach hotels for your next visit!
