Romans settled in Puy-en-Velay (then called Anicium) after conquering the land. A religious centre was built on the current site of the cathedral. In the Middle Ages, the city was ransacked by various barbarian invasions and homes were destroyed. In the 9th century, the city changed its name and became Puy Notre-Dame. The city is littered with remnants of the 13th century, including the Tour Pannesac tower.
